DOT / MC Number

A DOT number is a unique number assigned by the FMCSA to a commercial motor carrier. In other words it is like your social sercurity number but for your business.
A MC number is automatically assigned to you when you apply for operating authority and with this you are allowed to transport goods across state lines.

If you operate a commercial vehicle transporting passengers or cargo with a GVW of 10,001 lbs or more must have a DOT.
It also must be displayed on both sides of the CMV.

If you are operating a vehicle for personal use transporting cargo or passengers without being compensated
Farmers transporting certain agricultural products within 150 air-miles
Government agencies such as police, fire, or public transport
Non-profit organizations used for educational or charitable purposes

While both DOT and MC numbers are important a DOT is required for ANY commercial vehicle, where a MC number is required for any vehicles traveling outside of the home state of the company.

When you register for a DOT # and your identify yourself as an INTERSTATE commerce company you will be prompted to apply for operating authority and will be automatically assigned a MC #.
