What is a 2290 and why do I need it?

 If you have registered a vehicle that has a gross weight of 55,000lbs or more you are required to file a Heavy Highway Vehicle use tax know as a 2290.

 Basically it is the government’s way of keeping track of how heavy the vehicles are that is on the roads.

What is the purpose of the 2290?

 The tax collected is use for funding road construction and maintenance to the nation’s public highway system.

Could I be exempt from filing?

 Only vehicles owned by state or local government, or any agency thereof, are exempt. This includes public institutions like schools or universities.

What happens if I don’t file for a 2290?

 A penalty of 4.5% of the total tax amount due will be added and will increase monthly for up to five months.

 A 2290 is also required to have when applying for an IRP or county tag.

 Below 55,000 lbs No Tax

 55,000—75,000 lbs $100 plus $22 per 1,000 lbs over 55,000 lbs

 Over 75,000 lbs $550
